A case has been recorded where a 45-year-old man died after being struck directly by lightning while riding an electric bicycle. The tragedy occurred during a heavy downpour with a thunderstorm.
Bystanders attempted to save the man, called an ambulance, but the medics could only confirm his death.
Can an electric bicycle or electric scooter attract lightning strikes?
"Neither an electric bicycle, nor an electric car, nor an electric bus increases the risk of being struck by lightning, as long as the vehicle is insulated from the ground surface by its tires, " explains Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Alexander Rodin. "If a person were walking or riding, the risk would be about the same. However, railway transport can indeed 'attract' lightning strikes, which is why railway infrastructure is equipped with special lightning protection systems."
The specialist also notes that the intensity of thunderstorms will increase in the coming years, along with other extreme weather phenomena.
"And along with them, the risks that we traditionally consider low will also rise. It is important to remember that even after a person is struck by lightning, there is a chance to save them if first aid is provided in time and they are handed over to medics," emphasizes Alexander Rodin.
What rules should be followed if a thunderstorm catches you outside?
Move away from water bodies — during a thunderstorm, this is a high-risk area, as lightning often strikes their surface, and the current quickly spreads in the surrounding moist environment.
Do not stand on conductive surfaces (water, puddles, wet ground) — during a thunderstorm, it is better to wear rubber footwear or shoes with rubber soles.
Do not stay near tall objects, elevated structures, or on them. They can become natural lightning rods, attracting lightning strikes. For the same reason, do not seek shelter from a thunderstorm under solitary trees.
