The State Police is considering the initiation of a criminal case due to the intentional dissemination on social media of photographs of an allegedly fallen drone in the Smiltene region.
The police stated that the information about the drone's fall is not true. Law enforcement reminds that intentionally spreading false or harmful information with the aim of causing public concern may lead to criminal liability.
The police are analyzing the disseminated information and deciding on the initiation of a criminal case under the article on hooliganism.
The police also urge people to critically evaluate the information available online and to trust only official sources - websites of government institutions and their official accounts on social media.
As reported by Bb.lv, a drone was spotted in the airspace of Latvia on Tuesday. The National Armed Forces (NAF) stated that a drone from Russia presumably entered Latvia. NATO fighter jets, which were raised into the air, were unable to visually identify the object when it was over Latvian territory.
The NAF currently has no information about the object's whereabouts - whether it left the airspace of Latvia or actually fell on its territory. The data from air surveillance sensors is being checked to determine the possible flight trajectory of the drone. The NAF is also verifying whether this flying object was indeed a drone.
On Tuesday, shortly before noon, an alert about a possible threat in the airspace was once again sent out in the eastern border regions.
During the air alert, fighter jets from the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission were scrambled.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur reported that a NATO fighter jet shot down one drone in the southern part of the country. Information about the drone was received from the NAF of Latvia. Estonian radars also detected a drone moving towards southern Estonia.
