In the last 24 hours, Latvian border guards prevented 94 attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus. At the same time, four people were still allowed into the country for humanitarian reasons.

The situation at the Latvian-Belarusian border remains tense. According to the State Border Guard, on Wednesday, the 94th attempt to illegally cross the border was prevented in a single day.

At the same time, four migrants were allowed entry into Latvia for humanitarian reasons. Such decisions are usually made in exceptional cases — for example, if it concerns health conditions or other serious circumstances.

Since the beginning of the year, border guards have already stopped 2,983 attempts of illegal entry into the country. Meanwhile, for humanitarian reasons, nine people have been admitted to Latvia.

The flow of migrants at the border with Belarus has been a persistent problem for Latvian authorities for several years. Because of this, the government previously extended the enhanced border security regime until June 30.

It is in effect in Ludza and the Ludza municipality, Kraslava and the Kraslava municipality, the Augšdaugava municipality, Daugavpils, as well as in the Kaunata parish of the Rezekne municipality.

In fact, the enhanced regime allows border guards to respond more quickly to attempts of illegal crossing and to apply special control measures in the border area.

For residents of the border area, this means a constant presence of enhanced services and increased attention to the security of the region.

According to the border guard, last year, more than 12,000 attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian-Latvian border were prevented. Another 31 people were allowed entry for humanitarian reasons.

The year before, in 2024, 5,388 attempts to illegally cross the border were stopped, and 26 people were admitted to the country.

Statistics show that pressure on Latvia's eastern border remains, and the number of attempts at illegal entry remains high even several years after the onset of the migration crisis.
