On Thursday in the Augšdaugava region, border guards detained yet another carrier of illegal migrants after a chase and the use of firearms, reported the State Border Guard (GPO).
During operational activities, border guards attempted to stop a Škoda vehicle; however, the driver ignored their demands and continued driving.
The border guards repeatedly demanded in three languages over the loudspeaker to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not respond. He also did not react to warnings about the possible use of firearms and attempted to flee, prompting the border guards to fire warning shots into the air.
Several crews of border guards and the State Police were called for support, and as a result, the vehicle was caught up with in the Malinova parish of the Augšdaugava region, but the driver left the vehicle and tried to escape.
After some time, the border guards caught up with and detained the driver, who turned out to be a citizen of Moldova. Upon checking the vehicle, it was found that there were seven individuals of Asian descent inside the cabin and trunk without valid travel documents, valid visas, and residence permits.
Meanwhile, in the Andrupene parish of the Krāslava region, police stopped a Volkswagen vehicle on Thursday, which contained two carriers - citizens of India. During the vehicle inspection, three individuals of Asian descent were found inside the cabin without valid travel documents, valid visas, and residence permits.
On Friday morning, zemessargi noticed a suspicious vehicle on the road making uncertain maneuvers. The zemessargi followed the vehicle until it was stopped by police in the Preiļi region.
The vehicle was driven by a citizen of Belarus. Upon inspection, six individuals of Asian descent were found in the vehicle without valid travel documents, valid visas, and residence permits.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the citizens of Moldova, Belarus, and India.
