The State Police confirmed the deliberate spread of false information about an allegedly fallen Ukrainian drone on a passenger train last night, the police reported.
As explained by the police, false information is being deliberately spread about a drone falling on a passenger train on the Nīcgale-Vabole section of the Riga-Daugavpils line.
The police remind that on the evening of May 5, information was received that the first carriage of a passenger train caught fire on this section. The information currently available to investigators indicates that the fire occurred in the train's engine compartment and is likely related to engine damage.
The exact circumstances of the incident will be clarified during the criminal proceedings. The police remind that all passengers on the train were evacuated, and none of them were harmed.
The police note that there is criminal liability for the deliberate spread of false information and intentional provocations that instill fear in society.
The police urge the public to critically assess the information circulating on the internet and to trust only official sources - the websites of government institutions and their official pages on social media.
The Chief of the State Police, Armands Ruks, informed journalists on Thursday after a meeting of the Crisis Management Council that the Cybercrime Unit identified fake news in Russian social networks, one of which reported a drone falling on a passenger train. This false news was spread on foreign social platforms, and some media outlets have already published it.
Another piece of fake news reported an alleged drone falling on a residential building.
As reported, early Thursday morning, several unmanned aerial vehicles entered Latvian airspace from Russia. Currently, two fallen drones are known - one fell at an oil depot in Rēzekne, and the search for the second is still ongoing.
As reported by the Minister of the Interior, Rihards Kozlovskis, operational services are searching for the second fallen drone. According to available information, it may have fallen in a remote, sparsely populated area in the Rēzekne region.
