During the night in the Kaunas district, a locomotive and four freight cars derailed while traveling from Duisburg. Methanol was being transported in several cars of this train.
The accident occurred in central Lithuania - at the 44th kilometer of the Eśya–Rokai line.
"No hazardous chemicals have entered the environment. Railway staff continue to work at the scene," reassured the Kaunas Fire and Rescue Service.
According to preliminary data, due to the accident, movement is also prohibited on two adjacent tracks with a width of 1520 mm, so currently, traffic is disrupted in the direction of Kybartai and Marijampolė.
It is forecasted that the movement of 22 passenger trains will be affected. "A total of about 800 passengers were expected to use them. Passenger train services will be partially replaced by transferring passengers to buses," stated the Lithuanian Railways.
The incident also affected two transit passenger trains connecting the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation with Russia. Transit passenger train services will be completely halted.
Railway representatives report that efforts are being made to eliminate the accident. "The accident occurred around 11 PM on Saturday. The team worked all night, the train has been detached, and work is now underway to remove the derailed cars and locomotive," said Sandra Trinkūnaitė-Rimkienė, the public relations manager of the LTG group, to the Elta agency on Sunday morning.
As reported by bb.lv, early Friday morning, three cars carrying gravel derailed at the Gudžiūnai station in the Kėdainiai district.
The circumstances of the incident are under investigation. At that time, the accident affected 23 passenger trains.
