In Riga, on Kocenes Avenue, food left on the stove for two hours alerted the residents of a 12-story building.
The flames spread over an area of 15 square meters, and in the smoke-filled apartment were the family's pets — a dog and a cat. Firefighters provided first aid to one of the animals, reports the show Degpunktā (TV3).
The first signal of the emergency was the fire alarm system. Many had already gotten used to it and reported that they initially ignored the sound, even closing doors to rooms to hear the siren less.
However, as the signal continued for a long time, suspicions arose that something serious was happening. Thanks to the system, rescuers arrived at the scene, but it was initially unclear on which floor to search for the problem. When the fire broke out, smoke began to billow from the window of one of the apartments on the 10th floor.
There were no people in the burning apartment, but medical personnel are always called for safety reasons. This time, the Emergency Medical Service team was on site, but fortunately, their assistance was not needed. Rescuers carried two animals out of the smoke-filled home. One of them was in critical condition.
"The first we brought out was the cat, which showed no signs of life. Our colleague managed to revive it, which is a positive moment. A dog was also brought out from the apartment," said the commander of the 7th unit of the Riga Fire and Rescue Service, Mārtiņš Marcis Putniņš.
When asked how they managed to revive the cat, he replied: "By folk methods — fresh air, water, light chest massage. We cooled the cat down — it had inhaled combustion products. Fortunately, no one else was harmed."
Thanks should also be given to the neighbors who, seeing that the cat was in distress, were ready to take it to a veterinary clinic. However, within a few minutes, the owner of the animal was found, who, relieved that his pet was alive, placed it in his car and hurried to the vet.
In the kitchen of the apartment, household items were burning over an area of 15 square meters. The residents had left food cooking on the stove. Firefighters emphasize that it is extremely important to respond to the loud fire alarm signal to leave the building as quickly as possible and not to become trapped in smoke or fire.
