The court will continue the trial of the electrician accused of espionage in favor of Russia

The Riga City Court will continue the judicial investigation into the criminal case against an electrician accused of espionage on behalf of the Russian military intelligence agency (GRU) today at 9:30 in a closed court session, the LETA agency learned from the court.

According to the indictment, motivated by ideological reasons, a citizen of Latvia collected and transmitted information to the GRU about private infrastructure in Latvia suitable for aviation use, such as the Spilve airfield, the presence of NATO allied forces in the country, and various current issues in the defense sector. Additionally, as reported by the LETA agency from the prosecutor's office, he provided the GRU with information about the sentiments of Latvian society and the support being given to Ukraine.

At the request of the Russian intelligence service, the man also obtained practical information, such as the conditions for purchasing prepaid mobile SIM cards in Latvia—whether they could be bought without revealing one's identity.

During the investigation conducted by the Security Police (SP), it was established that the individual maintained covert contacts with an officer of the Russian GRU and transmitted the information he received to him.

The criminal proceedings against this individual were initiated by the SP on October 14, 2025, based on information provided by the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIBS).

The SP, in cooperation with the MIBS, arrested this person in the night of October 18, 2025. As a preventive measure, he was placed in custody.
