Latvian Border Guards Report New Ingenious Smugglers' Trick

Border guards have retrieved tractor tire chambers with smuggled cigarettes from the Daugava River for the second time in a week, reported the State Border Guard.

Smugglers are transporting cigarettes along the Daugava River in tractor tires.

A border patrol noticed a suspicious object floating in the Daugava River in the Piedruja municipality of the Kraslava region.

After inspecting the section of the river by motorboat, the border guards discovered two tractor tire chambers, which contained bundles wrapped in black polyethylene film. Inside the chambers were 62,060 "NZ Gold Superslim" cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.

The cigarettes have been handed over to the State Police, which has initiated a criminal process.

As reported, at the end of last week, border guards discovered a similar raft made of chambers on the Daugava River, which was transporting 66,120 "NZ Gold" cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
