The State Border Guard prevented the largest attempt of illegal migrants to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border this year in a single day, the agency LETA was informed by the department.
In the past 24 hours, 45 individuals attempted to cross the border. In total, this year, 81 attempts of illegal border crossing have been prevented.
As reported, the government has extended the enhanced border security regime on the Belarusian direction until June 30 of this year. This was implemented due to the increased flow of illegal migrants created by Belarus. The enhanced control regime is in effect in Ludza and the municipalities of Ludza County, Kraslava and its municipalities, Augšdaugava County, Daugavpils, as well as in the municipality of Kaunata in the Rezekne County.
Last year, the State Border Guard prevented a total of 12,046 attempts of illegal border crossing between Latvia and Belarus. For humanitarian reasons, crossing the border was not prohibited for 31 illegal migrants last year. In 2024, 5,388 individuals were prevented from illegally crossing the border, while 26 individuals were admitted to the country for humanitarian reasons.
