The USA national team has secured its place in the knockout matches of the World Cup ahead of schedule.
In the second round of Group D, the Americans confidently defeated Australia 2-0 in Seattle, maintaining a perfect record in the tournament.
The scoring opened in the 11th minute. Folarin Balogun broke into the penalty area and made a dangerous pass towards the goal, after which Australian defender Cameron Burgess deflected the ball into his own net.
Just before halftime, the tournament hosts increased their lead. After a corner kick and a series of deflections, the ball ended up with Alexander Freeman, who sent it into the net, making the score 2-0.
After the break, the game noticeably calmed down. The Australians failed to organize serious pressure, while the Americans confidently controlled the match and brought it to victory.
After two rounds, the USA national team has six points and a guaranteed place in the playoffs.
What is important to know: in the World Cup with 48 teams, advancing to the playoffs is guaranteed not only to the top two teams in the group but also to the eight best teams that finish in third place. However, the USA has already secured its participation in the next round regardless of the other results.
The fate of the other teams in Group D will become clearer after the match between Turkey and Paraguay, which will take place in Santa Clara.
