A tragedy occurred in Ziepniekkalns, on Pipenju Street — a man jumped out of a fourth-floor apartment window and died.

Residents of the building report that they heard strange sounds at night, but they only learned about the terrible incident in the morning when services arrived and the police began knocking on apartment doors, reports the Degpunktā program (TV3).

Medics covered the body of the deceased with a blue tarp, while a police patrol secured the perimeter outside the house, awaiting the arrival of morgue workers. Meanwhile, the police's ability to control the crime scene appeared questionable: the playground and the unattended body were located behind the building, while the law enforcement crew was initially at the entrance on the other side of the house.

The police agreed that it would be wiser to drive to the other side of the building. They had been on the scene since early morning — the first call was about a man who had fallen from a fourth-floor apartment window. Residents of the building did not see the moment of the fall, but they say that strange sounds were coming from that apartment throughout the night. The active work of the services around seven in the morning indicated that something tragic had occurred.

"I heard that they seemed to have broken down a door or something like that. There were police cars, I think an ambulance. Even a fire truck was there," said Lydia, a resident of the fifth floor.

When asked if he heard any noise, Alexander, a resident of the third floor, replied negatively:

"Nothing was heard, nothing. Until we were woken up, until the police woke us up, we knew nothing."

After inspecting the opened apartment, law enforcement officers went around to neighbors, holding a photograph of the deceased, asking if they recognized the man. Some residents feel that they have seen him, but it is likely that he is not a resident of this building.

"They showed a photograph, but I don’t know who it is. My neighbor and I were going down, he was coming down. Maybe a week ago, maybe less. (DP: And who is he? Maybe he lives here after all?) People like that don’t live in our entrance," said a resident of the building.

Law enforcement officials report that the identity of the man has been established. Initial information indicates that he jumped out of the kitchen window of the apartment. The circumstances suggest suicide.
