Flooding Begins: Water Levels in Some Rivers of Latvia Have Increased by 2.6 Meters

In several rivers of Latvia, water levels have risen by 1–2.6 meters since the beginning of the floods, according to information published by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

The most significant rise in water levels is observed in the left tributaries of the Lielupe, as well as in the Venta and Barta rivers.

Moreover, it is expected to get worse. According to forecasts, the flooding process will continue in the coming days, so water levels in water bodies will keep rising, with a faster increase expected in the central and eastern parts of the country.

In the coming days, ice drift will continue in the rivers of Latvia. At the same time, river runoff will increase, and water levels in many places will rise rapidly not only in the rivers of the western and central parts of the country but also in Vidzeme and Latgale.

Meanwhile, snow reserves have significantly decreased in the Salaca basin, in northern Kurzeme, around Riga, and in part of the Gauja basin. Relatively large snow reserves are still present in the upper reaches of the Gauja, in the Daugava basin, in the Lielupe basin, and in southern Kurzeme.

Meteorologists also warn that in the coming days, low-lying areas and floodplains near water bodies will be more widely flooded in southern Kurzeme and in the Lielupe basin. A rapid rise in water levels is expected in the river basins of the eastern part of the country; in some places, ice drift will begin, and floodplains and low-lying areas near certain water bodies will start to be flooded.
