In the first cold nights of February, several heavily intoxicated men were rescued from hypothermia in Daugavpils, the local government reported to the LETA agency.
Municipal police surveillance staff noticed individuals who required immediate assistance. In both cases, the police arrived on the scene and found men in a state of severe intoxication who were unable to move independently and were in serious danger to their health and lives. They were taken to a sobering-up station, where they received the necessary help.
During the cold snap, the municipal police are intensively patrolling areas where homeless people usually gather and informing those without shelter about available social assistance options. If necessary, the police transport such individuals to the night shelter located at Shaura Street, 23.
During daily patrols, the police most often have to assist homeless individuals and those under the influence of alcohol, but they also frequently encounter residents who have found themselves on the street for other reasons, the local government notes. Intoxicated individuals are taken to the sobering-up station, while others are taken to the night shelter.
"The participation of citizens is crucial in preventing accidents. A person lying on the street is not always in a state of intoxication — they may be unwell and require urgent medical assistance," emphasizes the local government, urging residents to also report individuals found in the entrances of residential buildings who pose a threat to themselves or others.
