The State Border Guard (SBG) has prevented the first illegal migrant attempts to cross the Belarusian-Latvian border this year, the SBG reported to the LETA agency.
Border guards thwarted the attempts of two individuals to illegally cross the border.
Last week, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis stated to the LETA agency that despite a decrease in illegal migration pressure during the winter months, the Ministry of the Interior will not propose lifting the enhanced security regime at the border with Belarus.
The agency noted that the main reason for the decrease in the number of illegal migrants is the weather conditions - severe frosts and snow-covered roads.
Last year, the State Border Guard (SBG) prevented 12,046 attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian-Latvian border, while in 2024, 5,388 attempts were thwarted.
