The main reason that no violators have been detected this year at the Latvian-Belarusian border so far is the weather: severe frosts and snow-covered roads, due to which several days spent in the forest could harm not only the health of border violators but also the organizers of illegal crossings themselves, the State Border Guard acknowledged to the LETA agency.
Border guards are performing their duties at a high level, continuously monitoring the state border both physically and using technical means and solutions, border control emphasizes. The construction of border infrastructure also facilitates the performance of their functions and tasks.
Border control also reminded that the border control at the internal borders of Poland and Germany has not been lifted, which complicates or makes it impossible, including for those who have illegally crossed the EU state border, to reach their destination country.
In the first 22 days of January, no attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian-Latvian border were detected.
On Thursday, at the border control points in Terehovo, Grebnevo, and Paternieki at the entrance to Latvia, three citizens of Russia, one citizen of Ukraine, and one citizen of Lithuania were denied entry on security grounds.
As reported, the government has decided to extend the enhanced border security regime at the border with Belarus until June 30, 2026. The enhanced regime is in effect in Ludza and the Ludza municipality, Kraslava and the municipalities of Kraslava region, in Augšdaugava region, Daugavpils, and Kaunata parish of Rezekne region.
