The Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia, Daiga Mierina, signed a letter to the Nobel Committee proposing to award the 2025 Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump, reports the publication Ir.
Mierina signed a letter initiated by the leaders of the parliaments of Israel and the USA to the Nobel Committee calling for Trump to be awarded the Peace Prize. Although Mierina initially claimed that the signature was merely a 'trial' and the issue still needed to be discussed with those shaping Latvia's foreign policy, she later confirmed that the signed letter had already been sent to Israel.
The decision was not coordinated with Prime Minister Siliņa. Mierina also acknowledged that Foreign Minister Braže was also against awarding the prize to US President Trump.
According to the publication, the letter praises Trump as a 'champion of the world' and lists several international achievements of his administration.
The signing took place against the backdrop of Trump's statements about a possible annexation of Greenland, which have heightened transatlantic tensions. Mierina defends Trump's actions, emphasizing his contribution to the security of Israel and Europe, as well as Ukraine's ability to defend itself.
On the issue of Greenland, she believes it concerns Arctic security rather than territorial ambitions.
Why would the magazine Ir recall the prize that was awarded on December 10 of last year?
The fact is that Ir is considered a publication sympathetic to 'New Unity'. Mierina is among the leaders of the Union of Greens and Farmers, which has recently been strongly opposing 'New Unity'. For example, they demanded from Prime Minister Siliņa ('New Unity') to find and punish those responsible for the misappropriation of funds for Rail Baltica. Thus, they received a response with compromising material on Mierina.
