As a result of the gas explosion in the building on Bauskas Street in Riga, an employee of Gaso has died, the company reported.
The Gaso emergency service received a report of a gas smell in the stairwell of a residential building on Bauskas Street at 14:58 on Friday. The emergency service team arrived at the scene at 15:05.
During the inspection of the building, Gaso employees detected a concentration of gas near one of the apartments on the fifth floor. A person inside the apartment opened the door, but upon seeing the Gaso employees, closed it again, preventing the specialists from entering the apartment.
Gaso employees began to implement urgent safety measures — gas supply to the entire building was stopped.
Since Gaso workers had reasonable suspicions of illegal activities regarding the building's gas pipeline, the State Fire and Rescue Service and the State Police were called.
During the operation, when one of the Gaso employees was in the stairwell of the building, an explosion occurred in the apartment on the fifth floor. As a result of the explosion, the Gaso employee died at the scene.
The State Police reported that a criminal case has been initiated regarding the incident under articles concerning crimes against public safety and public order.
