The past five weekends are considered tragic by rescuers, the State Fire and Rescue Service (GPCSS) told the LETA agency.
During these days, two people died in fires, and six others were injured.
According to the State Fire and Rescue Service (GPCSS), on Sunday, a call was received about a fire on Kalna Street in Riga, where the second floor of a two-story residential building was burning over an area of 60 sq. m, the inter-floor ceiling over an area of 50 sq. m, and the roof over an area of 60 sq. m. Firefighters rescued two victims from the burning building, while one more person evacuated from the building before the rescuers arrived.
From Saturday evening to Monday morning, the GPCSS received 341 calls related to damage caused by strong winds. In most cases, these were trees that had fallen onto the roadway; in some cases, it was wires, wind-torn structures, or roofing materials. Unlike other storms, there were quite a few calls to places where the wind had torn off or blown away roofs and damaged various building structures. There were also instances of trees falling on cars and buildings.
From December 23 to the morning of December 29, the GPCSS received 508 calls: 61 for fire extinguishing, 377 for rescue operations, and 70 calls were false.
As reported, on December 25, two people died in a fire in a residential building in the Rezekne region. The residential building was completely engulfed in flames, and its roof collapsed.
Before the firefighters arrived, two people evacuated from the building on their own, one of whom was injured. During the firefighting efforts, the bodies of two deceased individuals were found.
