The approach of Christmas is also used by scammers posing as package deliverers from 'Latvijas pasts', DPD, 'Omniva', and others, public media reports.
The State Police notes that during the holiday period, the scheme of fraudulent SMS messages claiming that there are problems with package delivery is particularly popular.
"Latvijas pasts" has issued a warning that fraudulent SMS messages are currently being actively sent out, such as: "A customs duty has been applied to your package, click here," "Your package cannot be delivered due to an incorrect address," as well as messages stating that payment for delivery must be made immediately.
The Cybercrime Unit of the State Police emphasizes that December is an active time for scammers to send fake links in the name of courier services.
"If you accidentally clicked on a link that leads to an online bank where you need to enter PIN 1 and PIN 2, we definitely recommend not doing that," emphasized Solvita Slyazde, Deputy Head of the Cybercrime Unit.
By entering personal data and codes through such links, the user hands them over to the scammers. Moreover, scammers can impersonate any institution or service provider.
Phone scammers are still active. "They are currently posing as employees of 'Latvenergo' or companies that replace water meters, as well as presenting themselves as police officers and bank employees. These schemes are particularly widespread," warns a representative of the State Police.
