I Don’t Believe in Suicide”: A Car Was Pulled from the Bottom of the Daugava in Riga

On Monday, rescuers finally managed to pull the car from the bottom of the Daugava, which the woman drove into the river on Thursday evening.

On the evening of Thursday, October 30, a passenger car suddenly turned sharply and drove into the Daugava River while moving along the riverbank. On Friday, rescuers managed to pull the body of a woman, who was behind the wheel, from the water. On Monday, the car was raised.

The cause of the tragic accident has not yet been established.

The deceased was a medic named Ilona Jaukule. Her colleague commented on Ilona's death:

"I watched that video where she drives into the water. I read the comments and see that there are many versions — that it was done intentionally, that it was suicide... But you know, she worked so much! After coming from the ambulance, she went to toxicology. After returning from toxicology, she went back to the ambulance. I’m sure she was so exhausted — like, in fact, all medics in Latvia — that perhaps she just accidentally turned the wrong way... I don’t believe she could have committed suicide. All her colleagues would say the same..."

Colleagues note that Ilona was a very good person. She is survived by two daughters.
