More than 3 billion dollars are aimed at destroying the social base of crime.
Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has presented a state plan to combat criminal gangs and eliminate drug laboratories and training camps. The operation, which will involve 10,500 military personnel from the Mexican army, air force, and national guard, is estimated to cost 57 billion pesos (3.1 billion dollars).
Efforts to combat crime will focus on the state of Michoacán, which is 'experiencing a security crisis.' Plans include strengthening the state police and its attorney general's office. Helicopters, reconnaissance planes, and drones will be sent to the region. The plan also includes increased funding for social welfare, agriculture, infrastructure, tourism, and employment. Claudia Sheinbaum intends to personally oversee the implementation of the plan and 'report to the public every 15 days on the results.'
The announced measures to combat organized crime were developed following the high-profile assassination in Michoacán. On the evening of November 1, the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Alberto Manso Rodriguez, was shot dead in a square in front of dozens of people gathered to celebrate the Day of the Dead. A city council member and a bodyguard were also injured in the attack.
The state of Michoacán is known as one of the most violent in Mexico and is a battleground between cartels. Manso Rodriguez had previously publicly appealed to Claudia Sheinbaum for help in fighting the cartels. Mr. Rodriguez had been under enhanced protection since December 2024.
