After the thefts in kindergartens in Liepaja, the door codes were changed, and security issues were discussed in the municipality, the LETA agency was informed by the city's Education Department.
Renate Melke, the head of the communication department of the administration, reported that the issue of security was discussed and updated with the heads of institutions, parents were warned, and the codes on the doors were changed "wherever possible."
"We also reached out to colleagues from the municipal police, asking them to include educational institutions in the city's patrol route. Gradually, taking into account the funding from the municipality, surveillance systems are being installed in educational institutions — both in schools and kindergartens," Melke stated.
At the same time, she emphasized shared responsibility, urging parents to pay attention to who enters after them when picking up their child from kindergarten. Parents are asked to securely close doors and gates, and to report any suspicious activities to the institution's staff.
It was previously reported that a man was detained in Liepaja last week for thefts from kindergartens.
The police received information about thefts from preschool educational institutions. After receiving the information, a criminal case was initiated, and a suspect was detained on suspicion of committing the thefts.
As parents of kindergarten children told the local portal liepajniekiem.lv, the man entered the preschool institutions by entering the building together with someone from the parents.
