Why Cats Scratch Furniture: Scientists' Opinion

Brazilian veterinarians from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul shared interesting results from their research.

Researchers analyzed data from five hundred cat owners regarding their emotional connection with their pets. The results showed that the most beloved animals often exhibit the most disobedience.

The team studied the interaction between humans and cats, as well as the relationship between their emotional closeness and the pet's unacceptable behavior. The study used an adapted relationship scale (CORS) and a sample through social media. Owners who agreed to participate responded to an online survey.

Previous studies confirm that cat behavior affects their relationships with owners. Unacceptable behavior can lead to abuse or abandonment of the animal.

The authors of the study traced how close or more indifferent relationships affect the habits and character of cats. Women made up 90% of the participants in the experiment, and they showed greater attachment to their pets compared to the 10% of male owners.

Strong positive emotions were linked by scientists to factors such as frequent visits to the veterinarian, the presence of other animals in the home, and attributing human traits to the pet.

Cat aggression and constant excessive vocalization (meowing, purring, screaming), according to the scientists' observations, did not depend on the degree of emotional closeness with the owner.

Specialists were surprised that such unpleasant habits as scratching furniture and destroying various items were exhibited by cats that were particularly loved by their owners. Owners with a lower level of attachment did not encounter such unacceptable behavior.

The reasons why a high level of emotional closeness may contribute to destructive actions remain unclear. Perhaps such cats are allowed more, and loving owners show them excessive tolerance. How emotional bonds affect the behavior of people and their cats will be revealed in a new study, reports Earth.com.
