A 'serial robber' of kindergartens has emerged in Liepaja

After a series of thefts in kindergartens in Liepaja, city authorities have strengthened security measures: they changed door codes, increased patrols, and began installing video surveillance. Parents have been urged to be vigilant.

After thefts from kindergartens in Liepaja, door codes were changed, and safety issues were discussed in the municipality, the city's Education Department reported. The head of the department's communication, Renate Melke, stated that safety issues were discussed and updated with the heads of the institutions, parents were warned, and door codes were changed where possible.

"We also invited colleagues from the municipal police to include educational institutions more frequently in their patrol routes around the city. Gradually, depending on the municipality's funding, video surveillance systems are being installed — both in schools and kindergartens," Melke explained.

At the same time, she urged parents to be vigilant and take personal responsibility — when picking up their children from kindergarten, to pay attention to who is entering behind them. Parents are advised to securely close doors and gates, and to report any suspicious activity to the institution's staff.

It was previously reported that last week a man suspected of thefts from kindergartens was detained in Liepaja. The police received information about thefts from preschool educational institutions. Following the response to these reports, a criminal case was initiated, and a person suspected of committing the thefts was detained. According to the local portal liepajniekiem.lv, parents of the children reported that the man entered the kindergarten premises by going inside with someone from the parents.
