In 2024, 98 foreigners were sentenced to imprisonment for crimes committed in Latvia, according to summarized data from the Central Statistical Bureau, reports LETA.
Among them, one foreigner was convicted of intentional murder, for which the Criminal Code provides for a penalty of life imprisonment or imprisonment for a term of ten to twenty years.
One foreigner was sentenced to imprisonment for rape. The minimum penalty for this crime under the Criminal Code is four years, and the maximum is life imprisonment.
Six foreigners were convicted of theft, fraud, or minor embezzlement, for which the penalty is imprisonment for up to one year. Another five were sentenced to imprisonment for theft, for which the law provides for a penalty of up to ten years in prison.
Three were sentenced to imprisonment for robbery, the maximum penalty for which is up to 15 years in prison, and two for hooliganism, for which a penalty of imprisonment for up to five years may be imposed. Additionally, one foreigner was convicted in Latvia last year for the illegal manufacture, possession, and distribution of narcotic substances. The article of the Criminal Code under which he was convicted provides for a penalty of imprisonment for up to ten years.
