Drone Alert at Riga Airport: Takeoffs and Landings Were Prohibited Today

Due to suspicion of a drone near Riga Airport, takeoffs and landings were prohibited on Tuesday, reports the portal tv3.lv. However, no one has seen the drone itself.

The airport confirmed that in the afternoon, the airport's technical equipment detected a possible drone in the restricted area — near Gaviezes Street.

As emphasized by airport representative Laura Kukalova, "there are no drones on the airport premises, and there never have been."

"Today, October 21, at 14:20, Riga Airport transmitted information to the responsible services about the possible presence of an unmanned aerial vehicle in the flight restriction zone — in the area of Gaviezes Street, which was detected using the airport's technical means," the airport's press service reported.

Based on this information, the Latvian Air Traffic Management decided to temporarily suspend takeoffs and landings of certain flights for about five minutes.

The State Police, which arrived at the presumed location of the drone, did not find its presence, after which the airport resumed normal operations.

Previously, the appearance of unmanned aerial vehicles near airports had already caused disruptions in the operations of air hubs in several European cities.
