Nationalists Want to Simplify the Dismissal of Workers in Latvia

The deputies of the National Alliance have submitted a proposal for amendments to the Labor Law, calling for the establishment of the employer's right to terminate the employment contract in writing based on the necessity to conduct economic, organizational, technological, or similar measures.

The current so-called "inverted serfdom system," where employers cannot flexibly select the most suitable employee for specific duties and are forced to tolerate an employee who simply does not fit, does not correspond to the modern economic situation," the deputies believe.

According to the authors of the proposal, several court cases indicate that the existing regulations can create serious problems for employers, as state institutions have had to compensate dismissed employees using taxpayer funds.

They note that a striking example of absolute inflexibility is a court case in which the employer was a state institution with the highest competence in labor law — the State Labor Inspectorate. Despite its high level of competence, the institution was unable to legally dismiss a person who, after being hired, turned out to be unsuitable for performing their duties.

The deputies propose to establish that if an employment contract is terminated due to the necessity of conducting economic, organizational, technological, or similar measures, the employee should be granted a two-month period to search for new employment.
