The European Commission proposed to stop granting temporary protection status to Ukrainian men of conscription age, while simultaneously extending it for other Ukrainian citizens after 2027.
The European Commission (EC) proposed on Friday to stop providing temporary protection to Ukrainian men of conscription age who have recently arrived in the EU. This was stated by EU Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner.
According to him, the initiative concerns individuals who are prohibited from leaving the country under Ukrainian law due to military service obligations.
"Our proposal stipulates that temporary protection should not be granted to recently arrived individuals who are prohibited from leaving the country for reasons of military duty under Ukrainian law," Brunner noted.
He added that these measures are developed taking into account the requests of the Ukrainian side and the "changing defense needs of Ukraine."
At the same time, the European Commission proposes to extend the temporary protection regime for other categories of Ukrainian citizens after 2027.
Currently, Ukrainian refugees in the EU are under the temporary protection directive, which grants them the right to reside without undergoing an individual asylum application procedure. According to the EC, about 4.4 million Ukrainian citizens live in EU countries.
