An official investigation has begun in Mississippi into the circumstances surrounding the death of a one-year-old child who died as a result of law enforcement actions.
The incident occurred near a Walmart store in the city of Senatobia when police attempted to stop a vehicle with three people suspected of theft. This was reported by the Associated Press news agency, citing data from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations.
According to the official version from law enforcement, after the attempt to stop the vehicle, the driver directed the car toward a police officer, creating a threat to his life. In response, the police officer opened fire on the vehicle, which subsequently fled the scene. It later became known that the women in the car brought one-year-old Cohen Wiley to a medical facility, where doctors confirmed the child's death. According to public figure Markell Bridges, representing the interests of the affected family, one of the women in the vehicle sustained serious injuries.
Relatives of the deceased child expressed deep shock at what happened. The boy's grandfather, Carlos Haynes, described his grandson as a "happy child" and stated that the incident was a heavy loss for the entire family. Meanwhile, the management of Walmart issued a statement expressing condolences regarding the tragedy and confirmed their readiness to assist the investigation.
The Senatobia Police Department refrained from detailed comments, citing the ongoing investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations. The agency promised to provide available information as facts are verified. The Tate County Sheriff's Office, whose employees were also present at the incident, declined to communicate with the press. Specialists began to establish all the circumstances of the use of force, as well as the legality of the police officer's actions that led to the child's death.
