A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 off the southern coast of the Philippines resulted in human casualties and widespread destruction. Following the tremors, tsunami warnings were issued in several countries in the Pacific region, but the threat was later lifted.
In the Philippines, at least eight people have died and more than 200 have been injured as a result of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Strong tremors were recorded off the coast in the southern part of the archipelago, reports NOS.
The greatest damage occurred on Mindanao Island, where there are reports of severe destruction and building collapses. Among the affected areas is the city of General Santos, with a population of about 700,000.
After the main earthquake, specialists recorded at least 16 aftershocks. The strongest of these reached a magnitude of 6.5.
The President of the Philippines urged residents of coastal areas to temporarily leave dangerous zones and move to higher ground.
Tsunami Warning
Since the epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea, monitoring services recorded a risk of a tsunami. Warnings were issued in Indonesia, Japan, and several other countries in the region.
Tidal waves about one meter high were observed off the coast of Indonesia. Information about possible damage from their impact is still being clarified.
Later, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that the immediate threat to coastal areas had passed.
Rescue and emergency services continue to assess the aftermath of the disaster in the Philippines. Authorities warn that the situation may be complicated by repeated tremors, so residents of affected areas are advised to follow safety measures and heed the instructions of rescuers.
