The National Armed Forces of Latvia issued a warning on Monday morning about a possible threat in the airspace in the eastern part of the country. This concerns the territories of the Alūksne, Balvi, and Ludza municipalities.
The National Armed Forces (NAF) reported a new warning related to a possible threat in the airspace of Latvia.
Since 9:18 AM on Monday, a heightened alert regime has been in effect in the Alūksne, Balvi, and Ludza municipalities, located near the eastern border of the country.
The military emphasizes that, at this time, no additional actions are required from residents. If the situation changes, the population will be informed through the cellular alert system, which will send instructions directly to mobile phones.
The NAF notes that the airspace of Latvia is constantly monitored by both national forces and NATO allies. Additionally, in recent months, air defense units have been reinforced at the eastern border.
What is important to know: the warning does not mean that the threat has already been confirmed. It is issued in cases when sensors detect an object or situation that requires further verification.
Such signals have been heard in Latvia before. In early June, a similar warning was issued in the Alūksne municipality after sensors detected an unknown object. At that time, NATO mission aircraft that were scrambled did not confirm the presence of a drone.
Throughout May, residents of Latgale and Vidzeme also received warnings several times through the cellular alert system. These cases were related to unmanned aerial vehicles that approached the airspace of Latvia or crossed the border.
Some of these drones subsequently crashed or exploded, and one drone was destroyed by a NATO mission fighter over Estonian territory.
According to experts, most of these incidents are related to drones involved in the war between Russia and Ukraine, which go off course or end up near the borders of the Baltic states.
The issue of airspace security has remained one of the most sensitive topics for Latvia in recent months. After a series of such incidents, authorities have increased control at the eastern border and expanded response measures to potential threats.
So far, there have been no confirmations that the current warning is related to a specific drone or other object. The military continues to monitor the situation.
