The US and Iran Are Close to an Agreement on the Strait of Hormuz

Washington and Tehran have reached a principled agreement on the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, but the final agreement between the parties has not yet been formalized. According to American media, negotiations have progressed about 95%, but key disagreements still concern Iran's nuclear program and the conditions for controlling the strategically important route.

However, "the deal has not yet been signed".

Washington and Tehran have reached a principled agreement on the opening of the Strait of Hormuz as part of their work on an agreement, but the deal has not yet been finalized, The New York Times reports.

"The United States and Iran have reached a principled agreement that provides for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz," the publication states, citing an American official.

However, the newspaper emphasizes that it is still unclear how soon shipping in the strait can resume, as "the deal has not yet been signed."

"Since the details of the agreement have not yet been worked out, it remains unclear what kind of control Iran will continue to exert over the strait and whether it will exercise it, as well as whether it will be able to charge for passage," The New York Times points out.

Meanwhile, CBS News, citing sources in American intelligence, notes that Iranian officials authorized to cooperate with the American administration "are experiencing difficulties with communication within their own government system," as the whereabouts of Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei are carefully concealed, and there is no possibility of contacting him directly.

"And this is the main reason why the details of a potential deal with Iran and past agreements are emerging slowly. (...) When the US sends proposed details, difficulties in establishing contact with the Supreme Leader lead to long delays in receiving a response," the channel explains.

Earlier, on Monday night, Fox News, citing an informed American official, reported that the framework agreement between the US and Iran is 95% ready.

According to him, Iran "has generally agreed to the framework agreement, and we are 95% ready." He also noted that negotiators are still arguing over the wording related to Tehran's nuclear arsenal and the Strait of Hormuz. The channel's source noted that the US could resume military actions if an agreement is ultimately not reached.

US President Donald Trump stated that he asked his negotiators not to rush the agreement with Iran.

"I asked my representatives not to rush the deal, as time is on our side," he wrote on the social network Truth Social.

Trump emphasized that the maritime blockade of Iran will remain in place until the memorandum is signed, and once again noted that Iran "needs to understand that they must never obtain nuclear weapons."

Negotiations between the US and Iran have reached the final stage, but the parties have not yet been able to resolve all differences. The main obstacles remain issues of control over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program. Despite cautious optimism, the final agreement remains in question, and the situation in the region is tense.
