In California, a crack formed in an overheated chemical tank, and fire service representatives believe this could be good news. According to specialists, the damage could reduce the internal pressure in the tank, decreasing the likelihood of an explosion or the release of toxic substances into the atmosphere, reports NOS.

Due to the threat of an emergency, authorities previously evacuated about 50,000 residents from nearby areas.

The incident occurred in the city of Garden Grove. Problems with the tank began on Thursday when a chemical reaction started inside the container holding approximately 25,000 liters of methyl methacrylate. This substance is used in plastic production.

The situation was complicated by the fact that the tank's valves were blocked. As a result, heat and pressure inside the tank could not decrease naturally.

Major concerns were related to the possibility that, in the event of an explosion, debris from the tank could scatter over a significant distance. Additionally, there was a risk of a toxic cloud forming over residential neighborhoods.

Firefighters are currently continuing to cool the tank using special equipment. Despite the appearance of the crack, emergency services emphasize that the threat has not been completely eliminated.

According to the fire service, the crack does allow for a partial reduction of pressure inside the container; however, the risk of explosion still remains. That is why the evacuation order is still in effect.

Residents who left their homes have been placed in several temporary shelters.

Specialists are also monitoring air quality in the area of the incident. So far, measurements have not detected dangerous concentrations of methyl methacrylate in the atmosphere.

Medical professionals warn that contact with this substance can cause irritation to the eyes and skin, as well as respiratory issues.

Although the appearance of a crack in the overheated tank may reduce the risk of a catastrophic explosion, the situation in California remains tense. Emergency services continue to monitor the condition of the chemical container around the clock, and tens of thousands of residents are still unable to return home.
