An initiative to encourage the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their homeland through financial payments is being discussed in Germany. The proposal involves a one-time payment of €8000, Focus reported.

Previously, the average amount of such payments was around €1000 and calculated individually, but now a fixed and more attractive compensation for migrants is being proposed.

According to the publication, government circles believe that such a measure could reduce long-term budget expenses on social support and the maintenance of refugees.

There are about 900,000 Syrians living in the country without German citizenship, most of whom have subsidiary protection status. After the end of the civil war in Syria, the German authorities are discussing a revision of migration policy and the possible return of a significant portion of refugees.

The initiative is supported by some representatives of regional authorities, but it is causing controversy in society. Critics note that the amount of the payment is comparable to several months' salaries and may be perceived as unfair to taxpayers.

Experts also warn of potential risks of abuse, including re-entry into the country and attempts to re-obtain social benefits.
