After the incidents last week when several drones violated the airspace of the Baltic countries, the Chair of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen will visit Lithuania on Tuesday.

This was reported by the Politico portal, citing three anonymous sources.

The head of the European Commission is expected to meet with the heads of state and government of the Baltic countries to discuss response measures in connection with the incidents. The meeting will also include European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius.

An official familiar with the agenda of the visit informed the portal that the visit will not only demonstrate solidarity but also focus on strengthening joint defense capabilities using European Commission funding tools.

As reported by BNS, on May 21, an air alert was in effect for just over an hour in the Utena district due to suspicions of two drones intruding into Lithuanian territory.

After some time, they disappeared from radar; it is assumed that they either crashed or left Lithuanian airspace. On Wednesday, an air alert was also declared in part of the country due to a suspected drone.

Similar incidents have recently been recorded in other Baltic countries and Finland.

Last week, von der Leyen stated that Russia and Belarus bear direct responsibility for the drone incidents in the Baltic countries, and public threats from Russia against them are absolutely unacceptable.
