Europe should not enter into negotiations with Russia, as it has found itself "on the brink of defeat" in Ukraine, stated Estonia's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna. He is also against the candidacy of Gerhard Schröder as a negotiator with Putin.

European countries should not enter into negotiations with Russia. This opinion was expressed by Estonia's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna at the Lennart Meri international conference in Tallinn on Saturday, May 16. His speech was broadcast on YouTube.

"Russia is currently looking for wavering countries to sit them at the negotiating table. Because we see Russia in a shaky position. At the same time, I do not see their goal changing. I think their main idea now is to draw Europe into the so-called negotiations to position it as a mediator rather than someone who pressures Russia and supports Ukraine," Tsahkna said.

In his assessment, Vladimir Putin is now "on the brink of defeat" and "is not capturing any territories." In negotiations with Moscow, one must be "very cautious," otherwise it could "buy time."

Margus Tsahkna believes that Europe mistakenly sought peace with Putin's Russia after the invasion of Georgia in 2008 and the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Now Europeans should not "miss the moment" to weaken Russia with new sanctions and pressure.

The Estonian minister also rejected Putin's proposal to appoint former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a negotiator from Europe regarding Ukraine. "Schröder is Putin's idea. I think they are very close. Gerhard Schröder will not represent Europe," the Estonian minister said.
