The data was shared by Richard Hext, head of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association.
"We are talking about 100 vessels. Considering that there are about 23 sailors on each of them, it turns out that 2300 sailors are stuck on Hong Kong vessels," said Hext, as reported by the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post.
He noted that "very few vessels" have been affected, but the sailors are experiencing "significant psychological stress."
