After the recognition of the European Humanities University as an "extremist organization," Belarus warned that studying, working, or even financially supporting the university could lead to criminal liability.
In Belarus, criminal liability may threaten those studying at the "European Humanities University" (EHU), which is recognized as an extremist organization in the republic. This was reported by the Belarusian prosecutor's office.
It is reported that since the Supreme Court's decision, the European Humanities University, operating in Vilnius, has been recognized as an "extremist organization," and the activities of the university, its structural divisions, as well as the use of symbols and attributes are prohibited on the territory of our country.
"From this moment on, any financial transactions to the university, including tuition payments or charitable contributions, are classified as financing extremist activities, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison," said Dmitry Kudryavtsev, head of the Vitebsk region prosecutor's office.
According to him, employment relationships, teaching, or continuing education at EHU are interpreted as "participation in an extremist formation" and carry criminal liability for up to six years in prison.
"Moreover, the use of symbols, distribution of materials, or even having a subscription to the internet resources of this organization are also grounds for prosecution," Kudryavtsev added.
The General Prosecutor's Office noted that the measures were taken based on the law on countering "extremism" and accused the university of providing "methodological, financial, and other" assistance to "representatives of radically politicized groups, as well as destructive foreign non-governmental organizations."
