In Germany, politicians are trying to pretend that nothing has happened.
Pistorius called the withdrawal of five thousand U.S. soldiers from Germany "predictable," while the Christian Democratic Union (one of the ruling parties - editor's note) urged not to panic. The German Minister of Defense stated that the presence of American troops in Europe serves the interests of both sides: "We are closely cooperating with the Americans in Ramstein, Grafenwoehr, Frankfurt, and other places for peace and security in Europe, for Ukraine, and for joint deterrence," writes Deutsche Welle.
Boris Pistorius also called for making NATO "more European" and stated that Germany is on the right track: "Our army is getting bigger, we are increasing procurement, focusing on innovation, and creating new infrastructure."
Chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee Thomas Revkamp from the CDU party called the U.S. decision "a wake-up call," but noted that the withdrawal of such a number of American soldiers is "not a reason to panic." At the same time, Revkamp criticized Trump’s policy: "Security partnership is not a deal, and NATO is not a marketplace. The constant provocations of the American president are unacceptable."
NATO spokesperson Allison Hart wrote on social media platform X that the alliance "is working with the U.S. to understand the details of their decision." According to her, NATO is confident that it will be able to "ensure deterrence and defense in the transition to a stronger Europe."
