Father of nine Boris Johnson called the decline in birth rates "the best news in the world" in a column for the Daily Mail.
He describes how various countries are experiencing a decline in birth rates: in Italy, "the bells ring more often for funerals than for weddings," in Japan, playgrounds are empty, in China, entire residential neighborhoods remain unoccupied, and in certain regions of India, schools are not enrolling students.
According to him, in the UK this year, deaths will exceed births for the first time since the 1970s.
Many politicians call the demographic situation a crisis, but Johnson disagrees. "Crisis? What crisis?" he writes, asserting that the slowdown in population growth could be a positive factor. In his view, it is a "natural self-regulation" that reduces pressure on nature and resources.
He reminds us that during his lifetime, the world's population has grown from 3.2 to over 8 billion people, accompanied by deforestation, pollution, and species extinction. Even with the slowdown in growth rates, by 2080, the population could reach 10.2 billion.
In this regard, Johnson urged governments to "stay away" from programs aimed at stimulating birth rates. He stated that if automation and AI are indeed replacing workers, there is no need to "artificially" increase the population.
