Russia Can Destroy Thousands of Satellites with One Explosion, U.S. Prepares – Forbes

The West is preparing for a potential conflict in orbit and the risk of a nuclear strike on satellites.

Growing concerns about the potential deployment of nuclear weapons in space by Russia are prompting the U.S. and its allies to accelerate the development of satellite protection systems and prepare for a potential conflict in orbit, Forbes reports.

Space security expert Victoria Samson from the Secure World Foundation emphasized that there are increasing signs of modernization in Russian anti-satellite systems.

Nuclear Threat in Space

Particular concern is raised by the Russian Nudol system, which could be adapted for use with a nuclear warhead. In the event of an explosion in low Earth orbit, this could cause a powerful electromagnetic pulse and destroy a large number of satellites.

Researchers estimate that such an explosion could not only incapacitate orbital infrastructure but also pose a lethal threat to the crews of space stations.

Western Response

After the White House classified such developments as a high-level threat, the U.S. Department of Defense intensified work on countermeasures. In particular, the adaptation of existing missile defense systems, such as Aegis, is being considered for destroying enemy satellites.

Additionally, the U.S. is working on a large-scale missile defense project called the Iron Dome, which may include orbital interceptors to destroy missiles shortly after launch.

Experts estimate that the cost of creating such a system could range from hundreds of billions to several trillion dollars over two decades.

Analysts warn that the deployment of space defense systems could provoke a new arms race and make orbit even more vulnerable in the event of escalation.

Satellites and Communication Under Threat

Among the potential targets for Russia are satellite networks, particularly the SpaceX system and its Starlink project, which provides communication, including in Ukraine.

Even one nuclear explosion in space could incapacitate thousands of satellites and paralyze global communications.

Against this backdrop, Washington does not rule out harsh response scenarios – from intercepting launches to preemptive actions against infrastructure.
