John Falan has left the position of Secretary of the Navy of the United States, with the resignation taking effect immediately. His departure is already not the first high-profile personnel change in the American military department amid the war with Iran.

The U.S. administration has changed its Secretary of the Navy amid the maritime blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The immediate departure of John Falan from his position was announced on Wednesday, April 22, by the official representative of the Department of Defense on the platform X, Sean Parnell. The reasons for the resignation were not disclosed by the department. The Deputy Secretary of the Navy, Hung Kao, has been appointed as the acting Secretary of the Navy, according to DW.

Falan, a former investment banker, took office in March of last year. Among the priorities of his work was strengthening the shipbuilding industry and maritime sector.

Conflict with Leadership

According to The New York Times, tension had been building for several months between Falan and his immediate superiors - Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and his deputy Stephen Feinberg. Feinberg was particularly dissatisfied with how Falan was implementing a new Navy initiative in shipbuilding.

However, as recently as December, Falan, along with President Donald Trump, announced plans to build new battleships that would be named after the president. At that presentation, Trump spoke of Falan in the most enthusiastic terms.

Not the First High-Profile Resignation

Falan's departure occurred at a time when the Navy plays a key role in the U.S. war against Iran: Trump seeks to cut Tehran off from important sources of revenue through a maritime blockade that extends to all vessels coming from or heading to Iranian ports.

About three weeks ago, Secretary of Defense Hegseth forced the resignation of U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Randy George. George had been appointed to this position by Trump’s predecessor - Democratic President Joe Biden.

Since Trump's return to the White House, more than 10 high-ranking military officials have lost their positions, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Brown, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force General Jim Slife, and Director of Military Intelligence Jeffrey Cruz.
