Russians Conduct Assaults Along the Entire Front Line: ISW Explains What Is Happening

In recent days, Russians have conducted several assaults sized at a platoon or smaller along the entire front line, while it is unlikely that these efforts will significantly strengthen the Russian spring-summer offensive of 2026. This is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War.

Analysts note that Russian forces conducted four mechanized and motorized assaults in three regions over the past 48 hours – two mechanized assaults east of Chasiv Yar on April 18 and 19, a motorized assault using several Ural trucks and at least six motorcycles east of Sviatopetrivka (northwest of Huliaipole) on April 18, and a platoon-sized mechanized assault near Kucherov, Kursk Oblast (southeast of Hlushkovo) on April 19.

"ISW found no evidence that these assaults resulted in tactically significant successes, and three of the four assaults apparently did not extend beyond the line of contact," the report states.

Analysts suggest that these assaults may have represented reconnaissance operations aimed at studying, identifying, or testing Ukrainian positions and defensive structures ahead of future ground offensives. The Russians may also have been conducting situational assaults aimed at exploiting presumed or actual tactical advantages near Chasiv Yar, Sviatopetrivka, and Kucherov.

ISW believes that Russian forces may intend to conduct such assaults across the theater of operations to pin down Ukrainian forces in areas that are currently not priorities for Russia: advancing toward Ukraine's fortified belt in the Donetsk region, particularly its northern end - Sloviansk.

"At the same time, to achieve an operationally significant effect, Russian forces will need to commit more substantial forces and material resources over a longer period," ISW emphasizes.

Analysts also note that Russian forces have sought to maintain the illusion of simultaneous advances in multiple directions during their spring-summer offensive; however, so far their efforts have not yielded significant results:

"Russian forces are distributing their forces in a way that diverts resources from main operations, and the mechanized and motorized assaults on April 18-19 largely do not support efforts in Sloviansk. Only the advance northwest of Huliaipole occurred in an area that Russian forces reportedly reinforced with strategic reserves, and Russian forces continue to struggle to achieve their objectives in the spring-summer offensive."
