Japan on Edge: Strong Earthquake and Tsunami Threat in the East

The eastern and northeastern regions of Japan are under tsunami threat after a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck the country on April 20.

The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7. Initially assessed at 7.4, the figure was quickly revised and raised to 7.5.

Japanese media immediately reported that tsunamis are expected in the prefectures of Aomori, Miyagi, and Fukushima in the near future. However, preliminary data suggests that wave heights are unlikely to exceed one meter.

The epicenter of this natural disaster was located deep in the Pacific Ocean, just 10 kilometers from the surface. Its power was so great that tremors were felt even in the capital, Tokyo, despite the hundreds of kilometers separating it from the epicenter.

According to NHK, residents of Wakui in Miyagi Prefecture and Yokote in Akita Prefecture felt tremors of the third degree. The meteorological agency also warned of "ground shaking" that could cause discomfort for people in upper floors of buildings.

In response to the tsunami threat, the Japanese armed forces were immediately put on full alert. Their task is to ensure rapid response and effectively combat potential destructive consequences.

Evacuation Call

Many media outlets report on an evacuation call addressed to residents of 11 cities in Iwate Prefecture. It is there, according to preliminary forecasts, that the highest and most dangerous waves are expected, although these recommendations are voluntary.

The meteorological agency strongly advises anyone in the risk zone to immediately leave coastal areas and riverbanks. The safest option is to seek shelter on high ground and hills. Additionally, residents have been warned of a high likelihood of aftershocks in the coming week.
