Iran's new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei does not appear in public because his face is 'disfigured' after an airstrike, reports the international news agency Reuters, citing three people close to the politician.
“Khamenei is still recovering from severe facial and leg injuries sustained in an airstrike that killed his father at the beginning of the war.
According to all three sources, as a result of the attack on the supreme leader's residence in central Tehran, Khamenei's face was disfigured and he sustained serious injuries to one or both legs,” the news agency reports.
Meanwhile, the publication notes that Khamenei “is recovering and maintaining mental clarity,” participating in meetings with senior officials via conference calls and in decision-making on key issues, including the conflict and negotiations with the U.S.
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh recently stated that Khamenei is fully healthy and continues to lead the country. He attributed his absence from public events solely to security measures.
