It turns out that you can forgive absolutely everything. The example of Berfin Ozek from Turkey is a vivid confirmation of this. In 2019, her ex-boyfriend doused her with acid, and a year later she asked for his release.
Jealous of a Pole
Berfin Ozek was the favorite of her parents and the life of the party. The charming 18-year-old girl attracted attention, and no one was surprised when she started a romance with 20-year-old Kasim Ozan Celtik. Initially, the relationship was quite harmonious, but then it took a turn for the worse. The thing is, Kasim turned out to be an impossible possessive.
The girl couldn't go anywhere without his company; even when he was right next to her, he was jealous of her for every pole. Eventually, after several months of quarrels, Berfin announced that she was leaving. The boyfriend's reaction was straight out of a movie; he declared that if his beloved would not be his, then she would be no one's.
It cannot be said that Berfin took these words as a serious threat. After all, who knows what a heartbroken guy might say in anger? Her family also perceived what was happening as something natural. How many more of these youthful romances would there be... However, Kasim was very serious. One day, he went to a hardware store and bought acid.
“You will be mine or no one’s”
On January 15, 2019, Berfin was returning home in the evening. She heard hurried footsteps behind her and turned around. In the next moment, her face was burned with hellish pain. After splashing acid in her face, Kasim shouted once more: “You will be mine or no one’s” before fleeing the scene.
Passersby rushed to the girl’s screams, and someone called an ambulance. The fight for Berfin's life lasted several months. In the end, the doctors won, but her face, eyelids, lips, neck, and chest were left with terrible scars. She completely lost vision in her right eye.
The police arrested Kasim on the same day he splashed acid in the girl's face. He did not deny anything. The prosecutor demanded a life sentence for attempted murder. However, the court settled on a milder charge — intentional infliction of serious bodily harm. In the end, the sadist received only 13.5 years. Berfin, her family, and the entire Turkish public were outraged by the leniency of the sentence.
But the most interesting part comes next.
Flooded with Love Letters
Once in prison, Kasim began to inundate Berfin with love letters. Why would she even read notes from someone who splashed acid in her face and ruined her life? Perhaps she hoped for an apology, but in the end, love letters kept coming one after another, and she continued to read them. As a result, something happened that no one expected.
In April 2020, Berfin went to court to... withdraw her complaint against her ex. She stated that she still loved him, continued to communicate with him, and did not want him to be in prison. Then changes in Turkish legislation occurred due to the global pandemic... In general, in December 2021, Kasim was released. After that... he and Berfin got married. Secretly from friends and relatives. The girl’s parents found out about it from the internet and were so outraged that they severed all ties with their daughter.
It would be nice to write that the outcome of this horrific story was a strange but true love and long family happiness, but that’s not the case. Four months later, Kasim left Berfin. He said he had fallen out of love and wanted to live his own life. The feelings turned out to be insincere, and love faded. The girl still exists today on donations from benefactors.
