The museum will once again become a correctional facility.
Trump has requested $152 million from Congress to reopen the "Alcatraz" prison. This is according to the budget proposal for 2027 published by the White House. The document still needs to be approved by the legislative body, reports Deutsche Welle.
The U.S. President intends to transform the former high-security federal prison, which is now a tourist attraction, into one of the most modern correctional facilities in the country. Experts estimate that the total cost of renovations will be up to two billion dollars.
In May 2025, Trump ordered the reopening of the "Alcatraz" prison with the aim of housing individuals convicted of serious crimes. The correctional facility will "symbolize law and order," the President explained, without providing further details.
The "Alcatraz" prison, located on the island of the same name in San Francisco Bay, was established on the site of a fort, operated from 1934 to 1963, and gained a reputation as the most grim penitentiary in the country. It was considered the most secure prison, protected against escape. Among its inmates was the famous American gangster Al Capone. In 1972, "Alcatraz" was opened to the public. Today, the former prison serves as a public museum.
