NYT: The U.S. has begun investigating President Petro of Colombia's ties to drug traffickers. This is how the operation against the President of Venezuela began.
The U.S. Attorney's Office has begun investigating the connection between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and drug traffickers. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT) citing sources.
"According to three sources familiar with the situation, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who has had a complicated relationship with American leader Donald Trump, is under investigation by at least two federal prosecutors in the U.S.," the publication states.
According to NYT's sources, agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of Homeland Security have also joined the investigation.
On January 4, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained the incursion into Venezuela as a fight against drug traffickers. The diplomat described the incident as a law enforcement operation, noting that it was neither an invasion nor an occupation. He also promised that the seizures of tankers carrying Venezuelan oil would continue.
