The war in Iran diverts U.S. attention and resources away from Ukraine.
European leaders are considering the possibility of offering Donald Trump a deal that could simultaneously impact the situation surrounding Iran and the war in Ukraine. This idea was voiced by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, according to Politico.
According to Stubb, Europe could offer the U.S. military support to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for more decisive assistance from Washington to Ukraine in achieving an acceptable peace agreement with Russia. "I have no illusions about who can convince President Trump of anything. If I can convey at least one of ten ideas regarding Ukraine to him, I will consider it a success," he stated.
The Finnish president, as reported by Deutsche Welle, noted that the war in Iran is diverting U.S. resources and attention away from Ukraine. The rise in global oil prices, as well as the easing of sanctions against the Russian energy sector, could enhance Russia's financial capabilities to continue the war. Additionally, American air defense systems are increasingly being used in the Middle East, which reduces the availability of such resources for Kyiv. Stubb fears that all of this brings Kyiv closer to an unfavorable peace agreement that would involve territorial concessions to Putin.
